Basic Skills Save Lives

Posted By: Andy Barker

Basic skills done brilliantly work 99% of the time.

Whether it’s your patient assessments, hands-on treatment techniques or the rehab you prescribe, doing the 99% well, is better than chasing the magic 1%.

Students and New Grad’s more than most, often fall into this trap.

Chasing that magic ‘trick’ to get better patient results…

Like over learning all the ‘special’ tests, but doing a 4/10 job with the rest of the assessment…

Using all kinds of manual therapy ‘hacks’ like those ‘nags and snags,’ manipulations, active release, acupuncture…

Or using things like blood flow restriction, some high level rehab drill, or some ‘sexy’ exercise you’ve seen someone else on Instagram…

All while not nailing the basics.

This happens all the time.

Like when your athlete or patient is doing great with an exercise, you often want to progress them quickly…

Jumping to the next level of difficulty of that particular movement or exercise.

Sometimes this is ok…

But sometimes you push them too hard and their symptoms flare up.

Sometimes there is a lot to be said about building each rehab step logically, and not rushing steps.

Maybe you could make that very same exercise harder, by doing more reps, adding more weight, making them do it faster….

Rather than advancing to another exercise or drill.

The basics might be a little boring sometimes…

But it’s better to be boring, logical and reasoned…

Instead of picking a test, exercise or treatment that is complex or ‘sexy’ yet lacks any sort of clinical reasoning as to why you are using it.

And this goes way past just treatments and rehab.

Pitch-side trauma is the exactly the same.

Therapists often get hell bent on learning all these advanced airway manoeuvres…

IV access…

Or learning some complex joint relocation technique…

Yet spend little time on basic life support.

Basic life support is just that…

‘Basic.’

Yet it is the identification of a serious medical problem, early CPR (compressions, rescue breaths) and early defibrillation that will possibly same someones life…

Not generally some advanced technique.

I’m not saying you should not learn or know advanced stuff…

But you need to know the basics first…

And nail how to do these basic skills!

I’ll be covering basic life support, which is a necessity if you are covering sports games, in my next FREE webinar…
